Can EDS Be Cured?

Can EDS be cured? Sufferers and researchers are struggling to find the answer to this question.

The Case for a Cure

For those who have their lives disrupted by excessive daytime sleepiness, it makes sense they would want to find a cure. In those cases of EDS where there is an underlying medical condition which is causing the sleepiness, this is possible when the condition is treated. For example, those who are suffering from cancer might experience extreme fatigue as a result of the cancerous growths or because of the treatments. When the cancer goes into remission and the chemotherapy (or other therapies) is stopped, then the patient can begin to have their energy back. When the cause for the EDS is clear, that’s when the most success is found.

The Case for Management

However, for many cases of excessive daytime sleepiness, it seems that the cause is not as clear. For some, this condition may simply be a genetic abnormality, one which they will need to live with forever. Though it might seem like a person should be able to get over the condition, this is not always the case. Instead, you might need to learn how to manage your excessive daytime sleepiness in order to keep your energy levels as high as possible. Over time, you might find that you are able to live a normal life or that you can live a life and still have bouts of extreme hypersomnia.
